Juneau Symphony Chorus 2010
Mahler The Resurrection
Performances October 23 and 24 at the JDHS Auditorium
Show us your talents and join the chorus for Mahler's second symphony The Resurrection! Mahler 2 will be a monumental program-length tour-de-force, featuring one of the largest orchestras in JSO history, the full JSO Chorus, and popular soloists Beth Madsen Bradford and Joyce Parry-Moore. This symphony is a true musical journey, and MUST be experienced live. This is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to be a part of it right here in Juneau. There will be two performances on October 23 and 24 at Juneau Douglas High School under the direction of Kyle Wiley Pickett with William Todd Hunt as chorus conductor. The work will be sung in German. The chorus does not need to audition or memorize their parts. The registration fee is $25 which helps to cover the cost of vocal scores and rehearsal space.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How can I sign up for the chorus?
Turn in a registration form and the $25 fee to the Symphony Office or Bruce Simonson or bring it to the first rehearsal on August 30. The earlier you turn in the form, the earlier you get your vocal score.
What are the Symphony office hours?
The office is open from 10am-5pm, Monday through Friday. It is usually closed from 1-2pm for lunch, and may be closed at other times while the Executive Director is running errands. If you plan to stop by, it's wise to call or email ahead to make sure we're open.
Why the hype? Just how monumental is Mahler 2?
Kyle Wiley Pickett describes Mahler 2 as "Beethoven's 9th on steroids". Nearly all Juneau Symphony concerts have 60 minutes of actual music in them. Mahler 2 is 74 minutes long. There will be 10 french horns, 10 trumpets, 2 harps, 7 tympani, 4 bassoons, 5 clarinettes and many, many more musicians on stage. We hope to have 100 singers joining them. It's a huge piece and we need you to make it happen.
74 minutes! I can't sing for that long!
Fear not. Just as in Beethoven 9, the chorus only sings in the final movement which is 33 minutes long. The piece has 5 movements
Do I need to turn in the form to pick up a score?
Yes. You're welcome to stop by the Symphony office and read through the score, but you need to sign up to take one home.
Can I turn in the registration form and pay the fee later?
No. We'll start to lose track. Please turn in the $25 with your registration. If your budget won't allow $25 please call the office to discuss. We have a very generous scholarship policy.
What is on the rehearsal cd?
A recording of the North State Symphony playing Mahler 2 with Kyle Wiley Pickett conducting. The chorus part of the piece is on Track 5. The tempo on the rehearsal cd is the tempo the Juneau Symphony will use. If you have other recordings of Mahler 2 at home, remember that the tempos may be very different.
When and where is the first rehearsal?
August 30, 2010 at Resurrection Lutheran Church at 7pm.
I have more questions.
